What to Expect When You Get a Red Tag From Enbridge or a Licensed Gas Technician

Here’s an alternative version of the text: Gas utility providers like Enbridge or Licensed Gas Fitter Technicians may issue Red Tag Warnings when they inspect a gas appliance deemed unsafe to operate due to the risk of Carbon Monoxide (CO) leaks. These warnings are crucial for safeguarding the health and safety of residents in both residential and commercial properties. Red Tag Warnings are categorized into two types—Type A and Type B—based on the severity of the issue.

Here’s a revised version of the content:

Red Tag Type A vs. Red Tag Type B

  • Type A Red Tag is issued when your gas appliance poses an immediate hazard. The technician who issues this tag must promptly notify the gas company to shut off the natural gas at your property.
  • Type B Red Tag  is issued when your gas appliance requires attention, but not immediate repair. In this case, you have 30 days from the date on the warning to address the safety concerns. If the issue isn’t resolved within this period, the utility company or Enbridge Gas in Toronto can legally shut off your gas until the necessary repairs are completed in compliance with natural gas codes.

In both cases, homeowners must provide proof of repair or fix the issue by the deadline to avoid further penalties.

What to Do When You Receive a Red Tag Type A:

You have two options if you receive a Red Tag Type A:

  • Repair: You can hire a licensed gas technician to repair your appliance. Ensure that your HVAC contractor thoroughly reviews the red tag warning to follow the safety recommendations according to natural gas safety codes.

Replacement: If repairs are not feasible, you may choose to replace the faulty appliance with a new unit.

Once the repair or installation is completed, the certified gas technician can notify Enbridge of the changes. The HVAC service company typically handles the Red Tag Clearance after the appliance is fixed and ready for use again.

What to Do When You Receive a Red Tag Type B:

Red Tag Type B is usually issued for issues related to improper installation (e.g., venting problems, incorrect color codes) or due to outdated installation codes. For example, a furnace installed 10 years ago might not meet today’s natural gas installation standards. You have 42 days from the notice date to resolve these issues before they escalate.
