What Are Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTACs)?
Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTACs) are compact, self-contained, and ductless systems often used in hotels and condominiums. Installed through an exterior wall sleeve, PTACs have their condenser unit on the outside and the evaporator unit on the inside. They can provide both heating and cooling or just cooling, depending on the model. PTACs are ideal for conditioning air in individual rooms or specific zones within a building.

Tips for Choosing the Right PTAC Unit for Your Condominium
PTAC units come in various designs to provide optimal heating and cooling based on your building’s needs. Here are the four most common types used in both low-rise and high-rise condominiums:
PTAC with Electric Resistance Heaters: These units feature electric resistance heaters within the air distribution section. They typically require 240-volt wiring for efficient operation.
PTAC with Heat Pump: A Packaged Terminal Heat Pump (PTHP) can reverse its refrigeration cycle to provide heating. Ideal for regions where temperatures rarely drop below freezing, this unit automatically switches between heating and cooling based on the set temperature.
PTAC Units with Heat Pump and Electric Resistance Heater Backup: Heat Pumps are more efficient in producing heat compared to electric resistance heaters. This type combines a heat pump with an electric resistance backup, reducing energy consumption significantly in most regions.
PTAC Units with Gas-Fired Heating and Electric Air Conditioning: These units use a gas-fired heater with electronic ignition, running on LP or natural gas. The heater section is sealed off from the indoor space, using outside air for combustion and venting exhaust outside. It provides air conditioning through refrigeration.
Notes:
- In Canada, PTAC units use either R-22 or R-410A refrigerant. R-22 refrigerants are now obsolete.
- PTAC Sizes & Custom Dimensions: Standard sizes include 42×16, 36×15, 40×15, and 26×16 inches. For units with non-standard dimensions, custom-made PTAC units can be ordered.
- Manufacturer Warranty: GTA Restore offers at least a 1-year labor warranty on all PTAC installations, with most units including a 6-year compressor warranty and a 1-year limited parts warranty.
